We’re off to the Azores in September for a little over two weeks. We’d never really paid much attention to this cluster of volcanic islands, some 900km off the coast of Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic, until it was featured in the Guardian travel guide. Continue west for another few hours and you reach Boston in the U.S. It’s renowned for nature watching – whales in particular – and we’re looking forward to a embarking on a couple of excursions to see what we can see at sea.

Our last whale watching experience was in Sri Lanka, and we spent a morning aboard a tour boat for John’s Birthday, searching for blue whales. We were lucky, and managed to spot one (or two), but at some distance. I guess this is the best and most ethical way of doing it.

So we’re now counting down the days until our next jaunt. Can’t wait……
